Written and Directed by Daniel Semel, Heroes and Villains is a day in the life of Jonny, Sid, and Natalie – three young adults wrestling with dreams and responsibilities, love and lust, euphoria and paranoia. Owing to the film's direct inspiration from a late '60s song by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, the score attempts to capture the eclectic, post-modern pop music of that era. To this end, Daniel and I chose a core rock quartet augmented with various antique and orchestral instruments such as harpsichord and timpani as well as '60s staples like the electronic Theremin. I wrote two songs for the film both sung by Jason Luckett – “Venezuela,” a swinging circus of thick vocal harmonies and “Lostall Blues,” a smokey, Doors-y ballad.
